Oriental medicine (OM), also known as Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a healing art that existed in some form or other for more than 3,000 years. Some of the earlier texts date back from the Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 ACE). In the western world, it is commonly known as acupuncture. However, acupuncture is only one of several modalities that physicians of TCM use to treat patients. TCM emphasizes the role of the body in the healing process and uses herbs and natural agents to maintain health. It is an effective form of treatment and a particularly safe form of therapy. TCM is a complete medical system that takes into account every aspect of human life to promote health and well-being. It sees the body as one whole entity like a “Garden” and encompasses its physical, emotional, energetic, as well as its spiritual aspects. It emphasizes on the “Vis medicatrix” the “healing power of nature” better known as “the inborn ability of the human body to respond to the insult of illness or injury and restore itself to health in most episodes of disease or trauma (Whorton, 2002, p. 6).” The goal for treatment is boosting the ecological condition to favor self-regulatory capacity. Physicians in the eastern world are trained to examine skin, complexion, bones, channels, smells, sounds, mental state, preferences, emotions, tongue, pulse, demeanor, and body build to discern patterns that underlie a patient’s complaints. TCM’s wholistic approach to healing addresses the underlying cause of disease, and allows the body to heal itself naturally. Physicians are taught to treat the cause not just the symptoms of an illness so that the body can function more efficiently and therefore ensuring true health.

Are you looking to improve you golf swing? Maybe you're interested in greater flexibility so you can finally master that elusive yoga pose? Thousands of professional athletes have used chiropractic care to get that extra edge to allow them to excel at their sport more than was possible before. If you've hit a plateau in your game, or want to see what your body is really capable of, you may be able to benefit from chiropractic care. Chiropractic care can improve or restore the mobility to your joints to help you move and function better, and therefore power through that plateau, giving you optimal results in your performance. How does this work? Well, throughout our daily lives we put our bodies through quite a bit of stress! Of course injuries and accidents can significantly damage our joints, but repetitive activities such as improper posture, sitting or standing are usually just as, if not even more at fault when it comes to joint damage. This damage, overtime, can manifest in a few different ways. One of the most commonly noticed ways is through pain. Pain is a sign of tissue damage and is your body's way of telling you that there is a problem. Another way you may notice that you have joint damage is through loss of function. You may notice that you aren't able to turn your head as far as you used to, reach as high as you used to, or run as fast as you used to. These could all be signs that it's time to get some help.
Having a few extra degrees of mobility could make a world of difference for you in your athletic performance - kick the ball further, swing the bat harder, or perfect the form of your back handspring! Whatever your goal, talk you your chiropractor about your concerns and she will come up with a treatment plan to help you meet them!
