Your spine is made of individual bones called "vertebrae", separated by softer, more flexible structures called discs.  These discs allow your spine to maintain flexibility required for motion.  However, through daily activities and injuries, these discs are often damaged, resulting in disc bulges or disc herniations, often referred to as "slipped discs".  Chiropractors are known for treating many causes of low back pain including disc injuries.  Flexion-Distraction technique allows us to stretch the spine and improve the motion of the joints in the low back and improve the health of the discs.  The technique involves placing the patient onto the table face down and securing his or her ankles to the end of the bench to keep the patient from sliding across the bench.  Once the patient is comfortable and secure, the table is programmed to the appropriate setting and speed for the patient's condition and treatment can begin! As you can see in the video, once the table is in motion, the patient's spine is repeatedly flexed to open up the joint spaces in the low back.  This technique can be used to replace manual chiropractic adjustments or as a supplement.  Many patients also experience significant benefit from utilizing this technique in conjunction with soft tissue therapies such as myofascial release or massage.  Learn more about different myofascial release and massage therapy techniques by visiting the links below.
