Let's Talk About Health: Bookbags

Some of the books that students as young as elementary school carry around can weigh as much as 4 pounds! Imagine the strain on the backs of these little ones if they are forced to tote around two or three of these things! Here are some tips to keeping your kids safe and pain free when if comes to carrying their textbooks:

1.  If your child wears a backpack, make sure the straps are snug and equal in length.  This will ensure that the backpack is not placing unequal pressure on his or her shoulders.

2.  Consider buying your child a rolling bookbag instead of a backpack.  This will take the pressure off of their growing spines and make the load easier to transport.

3.  Ask your child's teacher if it is possible for your child to leave his or her books at school over night instead of carrying them home every day.

4.  If all else fails, you can always ask your doctor to write a prescription/excuse for your child to use a rolling bookbag or to leave their books at school if these practices are against regular school policy.
