Sciatica and Chiropractic
Sciatica is a condition that affects hundreds of Americans each and every day. But what is sciatica? Well, simply put it is inflammation or irritation of the sciatic nerve. This nerve originates from nerve roots in your low back and provides nerve supply to the back of the thigh and lower leg. Many people will describe pain or numbness in regions including the buttock, all the way down to the foot. They may also have weakness or difficulty walking due to the irritation of the nerve.
As is shown in the image to the right, the most common cause of sciatica is a disc injury. This can be anything from a minor disc bulge to a disc herniation (commonly referred to as a "slipped disc". The damaged tissues of the disc cause irritation to the nerve roots exiting the spine, causing the pain down the leg.
If left untreated, the condition can become chronic, causing pain on as much as a daily basis. Chiropractic care is a very effective treatment for disc injuries, and therefore also for sciatica. Chiropractic adjustments improve spinal motion and provide an environment within the body for proper healing to take place. Ice has been shown to offer some pain relief on a temporary basis due to it's analgesic effects.
