Oriental medicine (OM), also known as Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a healing art that existed in some form or other for more than 3,000 years. Some of the earlier texts date back from the Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 ACE). In the western world, it is commonly known as acupuncture. However, acupuncture is only one of several modalities that physicians of TCM use to treat patients. TCM emphasizes the role of the body in the healing process and uses herbs and natural agents to maintain health. It is an effective form of treatment and a particularly safe form of therapy. TCM is a complete medical system that takes into account every aspect of human life to promote health and well-being. It sees the body as one whole entity like a “Garden” and encompasses its physical, emotional, energetic, as well as its spiritual aspects. It emphasizes on the “Vis medicatrix” the “healing power of nature” better known as “the inborn ability of the human body to respond to the insult of illness or injury and restore itself to health in most episodes of disease or trauma (Whorton, 2002, p. 6).” The goal for treatment is boosting the ecological condition to favor self-regulatory capacity. Physicians in the eastern world are trained to examine skin, complexion, bones, channels, smells, sounds, mental state, preferences, emotions, tongue, pulse, demeanor, and body build to discern patterns that underlie a patient’s complaints. TCM’s wholistic approach to healing addresses the underlying cause of disease, and allows the body to heal itself naturally. Physicians are taught to treat the cause not just the symptoms of an illness so that the body can function more efficiently and therefore ensuring true health.

Sports taping, or athletic taping is a fascinating treatment option that can provide a number of benefits, to the body's joints and soft tissue structures, especially in an athlete. Chiropractic care also focuses on the management and health of these structures, making taping a natural complement to the work we do as chiropractic physicians. So what does it do? Well, sports tape can be used to manage a variety of different conditions including, bruising, joint support, promoting proper joint motion and promoting proper healing and lymphatic fluid drainage. Depending on the type of condition being treated, your chiropractor will apply the tape in a certain way to promote the desired treatment outcome. There are several different brands of athletic tape that can be purchased, with an application lasting anywhere between 3 and 7 days, depending on the quality of the tape. They also come in a seemingly limitless variety of colors and patterns - this is just for fun!

If you've had athletic tape applied, follow these steps to ensure that your tape stays on as long as possible:

1. Your tape is safe to wear throughout any of your daily activities, including showering. Be sure that when you are in the shower, do not scrub over the tape but simply allow water to run over the affected area. Dab the tape dry with a towel once you're done.

2. If the edges become frayed, trim those regions with a pair of scissors, taking care not to cut yourself! This will decrease the amount of peeling that happens with the tape.

3. Do not peel off the tape or try to reposition the tape before you are ready to remove it. This will compromise the tape's "stickiness" and this will cause it to lose it's therapeutic effect and come fall off sooner than it should.

Following these simple steps will allow you to make the most of your athletic tape. For further questions about this topic and any others you have about your health, please feel free to contact our Daytona Beach Chiropractic office at (386) 872-7167.
